Your friend,
John Braynford
I read the letter twice for I could not believe it. I could not argue with any of the merchantâs decisions. Indeed, I had no right to do so. I wondered, briefly, about taking a ship to England to see the babe but I dismissed it. I had a son. I looked over to John and standing over him, took his tiny fingers in mine. He was soft and smelled, well, like a baby.
âMy son, I swear that I will be a better father to you than I will be to your sister. I have learned the value of fatherhood and of love.â I looked up and saw Elizabeth and Roger standing at the door. I handed her the letter. There was a chapel in the hall and I said, âI must go to the chapel, I need to speak with God!â
Roger put his arm around Elizabeth as she read. I went to the chapel and took out my sword. Holding it like a cross I prayed. âLord, I beg that Antiochia is accorded a place in heaven for she was a good woman. I did not deserve her for her love was unbounded and given without any reservations. I will not be there for my daughter, but I beg you not to punish the child any further. She has lost her mother and deserves all the love that she can get. I promise to be a better man from now on and I will raise my son, John, to be a true gentleman and knight!â
Elizabeth said nothing when I entered the room but she ran to me and threw her arms around me. William and Dai approached from the outside and both were laughing. When they saw us embracing, they stopped and looked at the baby.
Roger said, âSir John has had bad news from England. Any celebrations which we might have had we will have to defer.â
I disengaged myself and shook my head, âNo, we will celebrate the two births for Antiochia would have wished us to.â
Daiâs eyes welled up and I suddenly remembered that he and my wife had been very close, âIs sheâ¦?â
I nodded and took him in my arms, âShe is with God now, but she left me a daughter. Let us celebrate that.â
That evening was a celebration albeit a subdued one. I wondered how Dai would make it through the meal for I saw him suddenly force back the tears as he remembered something else about the lady. What surprised me was Elizabeth. She seemed to be genuinely upset that my wife had died yet Antiochia had been, as far as she was aware, a rival. She could not know that she was not. That evening as we lay together for the first time in many months emotion won over and, thankfully, John slept on through the night and we did not disturb him. It was as though it was a release for both of us. When I was able to, I wrote a long letter to John.
